Simon,

Personally, I like the feel of this layout. The palette is friendly and the banner image is a beautiful crop. It is clear, concise and pleasant on the eye.

My only gripes would be that the colour you have used for "At the back of the bike sheds..." and the date etc. lacks contrast. I am working on a very high contrast monitor and find it difficult to read, and I know that on some of the cheaper LCD monitors out there this would basically disappear.

Another small gripe is the area where the four content boxes meet draws your attention to it (I found myself staring at it, it's still early, but not quite 1am you loony). I think the lines and corners are too hard here and either need softening (drop shadow) or maybe even consider using rounded corners.

Just my opinions my friend, feel free to dismiss.

Otherwise a very pleasing design imo.

No cheers mate thats why i posted. nice to scroll down see a couple of complimentary words then scroll, scroll, scroll through paragraphs of. ... . .

With the border, i have forgot to place a small dark glow around most of them did some. With the test colors what could you suggest if anything?

Also keep staring into the boxes, when i click my fingers you will do everything. . . :D

cheers again

i quite like the rounded version, images might need to follow the same way.
but my question would be if i create the background with a simple repeat, with the image of the dark and light bkg how would i then create the rounded corners for the sections, a sqr/rectangle i could simply set the table/div background to white would i need to use an image cut or something etc

I prefer the hard edges. Sorry!

Nice feel to the site. Only thing that bothered me was at the bottom - the boxes should have a background "border" rather than the whole page finishing together, boxes, background and all.

thanks, with or with out shadows with out would make it sooo much easier to produce

thanks

edit: added a footer to this one and a corner version

CORNER VERSION

with the right column, need to think of other links and that to place here, might be broken into more squares etc, but also need to think of the content stuff, the main stuff will be the memories but what else etc to make it more exciting stuff to read...

Definitely going in the right direction. I like how you moved the search out of the top right hand box. A smart way to break up the little crossroads.

If you want to find out how to make drop shadowed or rounded corner boxes then buy Dan Cederholm's Bulletproof Web Design, step by step, excellent guide to creating simple effective web layouts. CSS, XHTML and standards compliant of course  .

Otherwise, and far less of a headache for you, use the last design which has no shadows on the main content. I like it myself, but I would make the footer less prominent.
