type pc to mac

Someone mentioned a while back that some pc fonts are compatable with mac etc
i have loads on my pc and ones i would like on my mac, can i just copy then transfer? if yes how do i install on a mac as in the font folder on pc i use file install ??

cheers also anyone know of sites with free mac fonts let me know

You should be able to use most PC fonts with OS X. The main problems arise because people hack font files to create new glyphs, but leave the old font information embedded in the new file. This in turn causes conflicts on the Mac when it tries to control the fonts. However, this rarely happens, and usually only with really ropey-looking amateur fonts.

To install, just dump 'em in your fonts folder, probably to be found at

hard drive / Library / Fonts

This will give all users access to the fonts. If you only want some account users to access them, put them in the Users / Account Name / Library / Fonts folder.

I would advise you, if you intend to use a lot of fonts, to actually keep them in a separate folder somewhere and use a font manager to activate them when needed, as they might slow down the system when loads are turned on. Suitcase is a perennial favourite on the Mac and has just been updated, but I'm using Linotype's new (and free) manager -
