layout prob

Post by Simon » February 16th, 2006, 4:08 pm

old problem probably.
this site i am doing as you ve seen, I have two columns that are unlimted in lenth, adn i have placed a backgroud colour fil on these but the columns would only show up when thers text in there, so creating a display horror see link below.

How can i get around this, i have left the length open as its going to be like a blog where text is going to be added daily so the length will change .

hope this makes sense etc

TEST PAGE IS HERE

cheers si

Couple of quick suggestions...

(1) Add a shim

(2) Use positioning to fiz size until text entered

(3) Use placeholder text same colour as background

(4) Use nbsp characters

I've never come across a practical solution for this. Seems a bit odd really that you can't give a 100% height, but I'm sure there is some common-sense reason for this that I am completely missing :? .

lets see: the second two Left & right columns, have a background colour of white and grey in them, but will only fill when there is text in them, for both columns to have the same length then bit will need the same no. of text (lines) in. The top two Left & right columns are ok because i have fixed then with width and heights, but because i have not with the btm two, just the width they need text in to fill either white of grey. I could fix the length but then when the amount of text over flows it ...aarg

take a look at this deisgn image of the site CLICK ERE

I could how ever to get over this problem, would be to set the grey coloumn, to a height thus leaving the white area just fill as it gets more text.
that looks like this then CLICK ERE. What you wreckon

If the column on the right isn't going to have much content give it the fixed height. I think it will look fine. If it will contain a large amount of content then allow it to fill with the content.

I reckon a fixed height and a restricted number of recent entries is the best way to go  .

cheers, someone suggested that to create a inner container and have a background image like the main section, thus this wouls fill both areas, did try it and worked but through the right column under, so sorted this out then the image /background disappeared

have done this to it.
