say i got this site which i would like to put a search box on, is there was to do it or does it simply search a db etc so creating it yourself would be fine etc and how,

There are several ways to do this, one being a DB search facility. Have a quick search on google as there are various search features you can bolt onto a site that index the content and allow a user to search by keyword.

funny enough i found something moments after wrting it. on phpfreaks, doh! basically Using the MySQL Full-Text searching,

SELECT field_1, field2, field3 FROM mytable WHERE field1 LIKE '%my_seach_string%'
